At the end of November, I am recovering and finishing pieces from previous years; I have left the beginning of another hanging piece in the parking lot; it will be for 2026, and let’s hope it doesn’t stop.

To celebrate the holidays at the end of 2025, I have used these small ebony and cast iron sculptures, “Column C2” from 2014 and “Column C3,” finished this week.

I wish you all good health, courage, and strength for 2026.

About the sculpture process

This small sculpture, begun in 2019, was initially just a project, a model. It was part of a series of four pieces, all of them vertical, except for this one, which was designed to be large and rest directly on a horizontal surface, with the intention of being able to rest on its four sides.

The remodeling of the piece, six years later, consisted of converting it into a vertical sculpture, abandoning the category of model or project to become a small finished sculpture. To achieve this, I added a side element and created a much more traditional base or pedestal, which forms part of the sculpture to raise it. Although it abandons the rectangular structure, I incorporated an upward curve to further enhance the elevation.

Obviously, it is still a piece that could be enlarged. And because of its shape and the process of sanding and polishing and the energy I put into it with my hands, it is related to the “force fields” series, where I have finally included it.

Although it may seem like a totally planned process, the truth is that it has been completely intuitive, and this is possible because of the small format, as I can easily cut and shape the scraps of wood that I keep.

EAST WEST

Location
masmir studio
C/ Ferran Agulló 3, local 2
Barcelona

«RESONANCES» takes place outside the walls of EAST WEST, in collaboration with masmir studio. This exhibition marks the beginning of a new program of cultural projects that will unfold throughout the year in Barcelona and its surroundings, creating opportunities to experience contemporary art in unique and unexpected spaces. By expanding beyond the gallery itself, the initiative opens new contexts for artistic dialogue, curatorial experimentation, and the encounter between audiences and creative practices. With each new exhibition, the project aims to enrich the cultural landscape of Barcelona, bringing together contemporary art, collectible design and thought in settings that resonate with both local and international visitors.

These days I am preparing the elements for moulding and, at the same time, the pieces that need to be assembled, this time not with ebony, but with Iroko wood. This sculpture is part of the ‘Connections’ series. The first sculpture in this series dates from 2011.

This is the sculpture I submitted to the London Sculpture Prize, for which I have been selected, now awaiting the jury’s decision.

It will be exhibited alongside the sculptures of the other selected artists at the Gunnersbury Park Museum from November 25 to 27. Private viewing on November 25.

GENERATOR / OBSTACLE / SHIELD. CAST IRON AND IROKO WOOD

56 3/4 X 25 1/4 X 7 7/8 inches. 2012

As my exhibition progresses at @siesta_art_i_objectes, with the heat of late June and visits from friends and clients, I have created this sculpture in teak wood:

The energy shield is a symbol of protection for this moment in time when all the news normalizes violence and war. It is truly a “talisman” in itself, but it is not the object, it is the intention with which it has been made. The only charge it carries is that of love.

This psychomagic act can be attacked but is indestructible in itself.

Pequeños formatos / Small formats (2000–2025)

This exhibition brought together a selection of small-format sculptural constructions, some of which had never been exhibited before, created between 2000 and 2025. These pieces are mainly made of wood, sometimes combined with iron, and emerged as studies, experiments, or simply out of the need to continue working with my hands and the material.

Small formats for upcoming, nearby works…

Each one is an opportunity to explore, to try something new, to follow an impulse.

These small sculptures tell an essential part of my journey through art.

This sculpture, which I finished this weekend, is the latest small-format suspended elevation that will be on display alongside a selection of pieces in wood and iron from the years 2000-2025, some of which have never been exhibited before.

You are all invited, see you there!!!

14 Infinitos / Madera de Iroko / 63 Ø  x 13 cm. / 2025

In 2022, I made a model based on 10 circles within the “Infinitos” series, and I have been interspersing the production of this sculpture with my work from the last year.

The sculpture, made of Iroko wood, consists of 14 circles joined together to form a larger circle.

End of April. Once again working in small formats, I have completed a relief in oak and stainless steel with highly polished wood.

As for the shine of the piece, I have never used any type of varnish, only wax for the finishes.

These new sculptures that I finished this week are based on two assemblages from 2011 and 2019 that I titled “Connections” at the time. They are two assemblages in cast iron and ebony wood perpendicular to the ground line, which have a lot to do with the elevations I was working on recently.

I had wanted to continue this series of “black” sculptures for a long time, and now, finally, I have been able to incorporate these last two. Although I had imagined having a group of eight sculptures, I don’t have the time to make them at the moment, as I want to focus on small-format pieces for an exhibition I will have in Barcelona in June.

(March 2025)

I have been working on this sculpture since mid-February. It will be the twelfth elevation, and this time I have not been sure of a single path to follow. I am working with more planning, pausing at each stage of the sculpture, drawing, making several models, and analyzing the visual consequences of all the possibilities that arise.

I have paused this series, but I have material for two more pieces, and I will continue it soon.

(February 2025)

Elevation No. 11 is the first sculpture completed in 2025. It is a piece supported by a cast iron base that allows for easy placement and manual rotation. It measures just over two meters in height, and I used polished teak wood, preserving the bark of the wood in the cuts of the elements that compose it.

Process of the first sculpture of 2025 in teak wood.

January 2025

When I began composing this sculpture, its structure had a connection with the organic, with the floral. The incorporation of the last element, which closes the circle, distances it somewhat from this connection by changing the rhythm of the distances. Each new sculpture forms part of a whole, which is the body of work, and allows me to draw conclusions so that I can continue choosing paths.

This sculpture is a teak wood composition, created from fragments, where the bark of the tree can be seen in some of its elements. It has a cast iron base with a pivot that allows it to be rotated manually.

Once again working in small formats, after receiving a new shipment of cast iron pieces that I prepared last July and will be producing soon.

After having been so focused on the suspended elevations series that can be seen in the first publication of this menu, a series that I will also continue in medium and small formats later on, as it is part of an unfinished but already advanced project that haunts my thoughts.

(October 2024)

Process of the first two assemblies.

Usually, in September and October each year, I prepare some sculptures, sometimes projects, for an exhibition in which I have participated for more than two decades. DelicARTessen, at the Esther Montoriol Gallery in Barcelona. This year we are celebrating the 23rd edition with the participation of more than 80 artists.

For this event, I am developing a series of black sculptures made of ebony wood. They are assemblages of wood fragments that I have been saving for a project that has not yet seen the light of day.
